ERC: 55.72% of power generation capacity now from renewables

Skopje, 7 May 2025 (MIA) — Slightly more than half (55.72%) of the country's power generation capacity now comes from renewable sources of energy, the Energy Regulatory Commission said in a press release Wednesday.

Citing data from its newly published Annual Report on the Operations of the Energy, Water Services and Municipal Waste Management Services Regulatory Commission of the Republic of North Macedonia in 2024, the ERC release says this is the first time that the country's solar capacity (28.40%) has been greater than its hydropower capacity (24.13%).

"Going forward, in light of this domination of renewable electricity capacities, we need to stimulate investments so we can balance our energy demands and strengthen our energy stability and independence," said ERC head Marko Bislimoski.

Regarding natural gas and heating energy, the report lists as the ERC's most important activities in 2024 the ending of the certification procedure for the state-owned natural gas transmission system operator Nomagas and the beginning of the permit issuance for the heating contractor Energy Ecolink (formerly Heating Plant Skopje North).

"Our sublimated water services sector analyses have confirmed yet again our high percentage of nonrevenue water in 2024 as well," the release says.

In 2024, nonrevenue water—or water losses—amounted to a national average of almost 64%.
