Eighth indictment brought against Struga Mayor Ramiz Merko

Skopje, 2 October 2024 (MIA) – The Struga Primary Public Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against the Mayor of Struga Municipality, Ramiz Merko, for "negligent work in service", over a violation of legal regulations in appointing an acting director of a municipal elementary school in the village of Radolishta.

According to the prosecutors, the defendant knowingly violated the regulations when appointing the acting director.

"Although the Law on Elementary Education states that an acting director is chosen from among the employees of the school who meet the requirements for a director, on 12.01.2022 the defendant appointed as acting director of the school in Radolishta a person who did not meet such conditions, i.e. did not have the legally required work experience of at least five years in educational work," reads the press release.

It adds that the person appointed served as director of the school in the period from 12.01.2022 to 31.07.2023, during which she has received salary and contributions as acting director, which has caused damage to the school's budget.

This is the eighth indictment brought against the Mayor of Struga. In addition to negligent work, there are charges against him for illegal construction as well as forgery of a document.

Previously, Struga Mayor Ramiz Merko was designated for significant corruption by the US Department of State.
