New York, 25 September 2024 (MIA) - The deep divisions among nations within the General Assembly are apparent, reflecting the real divisions that exist in the world today. Both the General Assembly and the world are facing a catharsis. This is the last moment or call before the celebration of 80 years of the UN. Why do I mention this? Because the UN was established in 1945 as a fundamental peace project and an anti-colonial initiative, and today we are confronted with war, President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova said, who is leading the Macedonian delegation at the 79th UN General Assembly, in an interview with MIA.

“So, the UN must confront the need for fundamental reforms - institutional, functional, and especially in the decision-making process - while ensuring the involvement of all UN member states in making key decisions. The most radical or strict among us, including myself, must say that decorative changes will not sustain the life of the UN,” President Siljanovska Davkova said.

She does not think that these reforms will begin anytime soon, noting that many leaders have called for serious reforms, but the key issue that has deepened the divide is the stance on wars.

President Siljanovska Davkova’s speech at the UN General Assembly will take place tomorrow afternoon. She said that she will deliver her message in Macedonian and among other things, will remind everyone of our commitment to peacefulness, dialogue and the respect for international law.

“Actually, I will elaborate on this, as I will have 15 minutes tomorrow to present my message in Macedonian. Two days ago, we discussed the future of the world, but now I want to discuss the future of the world through the Macedonian word, through the Macedonian language. Therefore, I will outline the fundamental theses - I will remind them of the tragic Macedonian story in which the UN played a role, reflecting everything we have experienced. I will reiterate our commitment to peacefulness and the importance of respecting international law through dialogue. I will point out the fundamental issues facing humanity, but now with greater argumentation, regarding peace and security. We have a Security Council, but the environment is unsafe, everywhere, even here in New York,” President Siljanovska Davkova noted.

In an interview with MIA conducted in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and between two meetings, the President Siljanovska Davkova also responds to questions about whether, as a small country, we should change our position in light of all the changes stemming from global trends, including wars, her stance on the French proposal, the Security Council, and the meeting with the diaspora, as well as the establishment of councils for youth and the diaspora.
