Dimitrovski: Messages from Washington call for continuation of Skopje – Sofia dialogue

Skopje, 30 July 2024 (MIA) - The messages coming from Washington are that the dialogue between Skopje and Sofia should continue, in other words, if the dialogue should continue, then that means a solution needs to be found as well, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Zoran Dimitrovski said in an interview Tuesday.

The Deputy Minister stressed that the country’s EU-integration path depends on whether Sofia decides to open the door for the country in the future.

“We are waiting for a legitimate government in Sofia. We are seeing that the situation there is once again heading to new elections. I hope that the pro-European forces will be in power in Sofia once again and all those forces that will be able to rationally grasp that Macedonia and Bulgaria should live as two countries with goodneighborly relations in the future, with mutual respect, not degradation, and by accepting the identity of the Macedonians,” Dimitrovski said in an interview for TV Kanal 5.

Asked about dialogue with Athens and whether he expects a meeting to happen between prime ministers Hristijan Mickoski and Kyriakos Mitsotakis or the country’s foreign ministers, Dimitrovski said such a meeting would be beneficial.

“I am not aware of any announcements, but I think it would be beneficial to hold such a meeting and continue talks to simply relax the mutual relations. What is much more important is for the economic and other cultural ties with both Bulgaria and Greece to continue, despite any differences,” Deputy Minister Dimitrovski underlined.
