Digital literacy, skills development and preserving workers’ rights a national priority, says Durmishi

Skopje, 11 June 2025 (MIA) - In North Macedonia we are witnessing the early yet swift growth of the platform economy. For many of our citizens, especially young people, digital platforms provide an entry into the labor market, often offering income where traditional jobs may be scarce, Minister of Economy and Labor Besar Durmishi said in his address Wednesday at the 113th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Durmishi noted the importance of the topic of dignified work within the platform economy, emphasizing that this issue is becoming increasingly relevant given the rapid digital transformation of the labor market.

“However, digital platform workers often lack formal contracts, health insurance, pension contributions, and basic labor rights. This is why the Government has launched a broad and inclusive dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to develop legal and policy solutions that ensure social and economic protection without compromising innovation. We will reassess labor legislation with a clear intention: to expand rights and protections for workers who currently fall outside traditional frameworks,” Durmishi said.

According to the Minister, the most important thing is the protection of the basic rights of all workers, including the right to fair working conditions, the right to organize and the right to collective bargaining, regardless of whether the work is performed on the street, in the office or online.

“North Macedonia firmly supports ILO efforts to establish international guidelines and standards for these urgent issues. We believe that dignified work must serve as the basis of every future of work – whether physical or digital. Let’s work together to ensure that no worker is invisible, no job is without dignity, and no future is built without justice,” Durmishi underlined.
