Dendias reiterates support for region’s EU perspective
Athens, 6 December 2021 (MIA) – Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias during a meeting of Parliament’s national defence and foreign affairs committee underlined Greece’s strong and continuous participation in the region, focusing on the integration of the Western Balkans, especially that of Albania and North Macedonia, MIA reports from Athens. Dendias added that the European perspective of any country depends on respecting conditions. Nea Demokratia MP Tasos Chatzivasileiou also expressed support for the European perspective of the countries in the region “provided they continue to implement reforms and abide by the good neighborliness principle,” while former Parliament Speaker and Syriza MP Nikos Voutsis stressed the importance of ratifying memorandums signed with North Macedonia. MP Andreas Loverdos from the opposition party Movement for Change said that delayed ratification of memorandums was understandable due to “doubts over the cohesion of the MP group,” as well as “issues over implementation of the Prespa Agreement by the neighboring country.” Moreover, he asked why the Greek government is in favor of abiding by the agreement, when no progress has been achieved and Greece has done nothing about the fact that “the neighboring country has violated the agreement eight times.” Greek Solution MP Antonios Mylonakis agreed with Loverdos that the agreement has been violated and reiterated his party’s position that the three memorandums shouldn’t be ratified.
