Defence Minister Petrovska in United States visit, to meet counterpart Austin

Skopje, 5 June 2023 (MIA) - As of Monday, Minister of Defence Slavjanka Petrovska is paying a visit to the United States where she is scheduled to meet with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

In a video statement, Minister Petrovska informed about the visit and other activities, including a visit to the North Carolina State University, and celebration of the 30th anniversary of the partnership between the Army of North Macedonia and the Vermont National Guard in Burlington, said the Ministry of Defense.

The meeting with Secretary of Defense Austin will focus on the future and challenges, and how North Macedonia and the United States can guarantee the safety and stability of the Balkans and the Euro-Atlantic area.

"If something separates our country and politics from the rest, it is that we are the voice of reason and wisdom. Our policies have always been based on values and opportunities, openness and honesty. Euro-Atlantic values are our guide in every decision, which is something that our American friends and supporters value. Hesitation and delay in making political decision are not characteristics of a leader, they only set the country back. We live in a time of serious challenges when state decisions are an obligation to the homeland, not goodwill," Petrovska said.

A meaningful part of the Burlington visit is dedicated to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the Army of North Macedonia and the Vermont National Guard. Minister Petrovska and Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Vasko Gjurchinovski, will also visit several facilities of the National Guard, meet with the Vermont Governor Phil Scott and Vermont National Guard, Adjutant General Gregory Knight.

"With the National Guard, we have shown that our soldiers are true allies and friends through mutual respect and trust. This can open up new opportunities for cooperation and development, and give energy and ambition for greater success," states Minister Petrovska.

Meetings are also scheduled in the State Department, along with a visit to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency and meeting with director James Hirsch.

The Delegation will also visit and discuss the continuation of cooperation between the oldest private military college, Norwich University, and the Skopje-based General Mihajlo Apostolski Military Academy. ssh/ik/
