Czechia and Slovenia to help North Macedonia tackle wildfires

Skopje, 28 July 2025 (MIA) - Czechia is set to send a firefighting helicopter to help fight the wildfires active across several regions in the country, while Slovenia will deploy a team of 50 firefighters with specialized equipment, said the head of the Protection and Rescue Directorate, Stojanche Angelov, on Monday.

“A short while ago, we received an offer of assistance from the Republic of Czechia in the form of a large helicopter, which we immediately accepted. The helicopter will take off tomorrow morning and arrive at the Skopje airport during the day, after which it will be deployed where it is most needed. We also acceptened an offer of help from Slovenia, which will send a team of 50 firefighters with special vehicles for extinguishing forest fires. The Slovenian team will depart around noon tomorrow, and will arrive in Berovo late on Tuesday, where they will be accommodated and will support the Berovo firefighters and other services fighting the large fire on the Goten mountain,” Angelov said. 

Angelov added that a crisis HQ is set to convene in Berovo at 9 p.m. Monday.

According to the Crisis Management Center, a total of 20 wildfires have been registered in the country as of 6 p.m. Monday, ten of which are still active, five are under control, while five have been completely extinguished.

The Hydrometeorological Service (UHMR) has said rainfall is possible in the northeastern and eastern parts of the country during the evening and overnight, which could help stabilize the situation on the ground.
