Skopje, 19 May 2023 (MIA) - The judges of the Constitutional Court, including its president Dobrila Kacarska, held a meeting with the Vice President of the European Parliament and a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO), Rainer Wieland.
“The discussion was focused on current challenges, such as the non-election of two more constitutional court judges by the Parliament, the way of working in the Constitutional Court from the initial stage of submitting initiatives and requests, to presenting the cases at sessions for discussion and voting,” Constitutional Court said in a press release.
Participants in the meeting also underlined that the average length of proceedings at the Court was cut from nine to four months.
Kacarska pointed out the shortcomings that appeared due to the incomplete composition of the Court, which currently consists of seven, instead of nine judges as stipulated by the Constitution.
During the meeting that took place on May 17 in the Court’s premises, the need to introduce a constitutional lawsuit was highlighted, which will increase the opportunities of the citizens to request protection from the Constitutional Court for every right provided by the Constitution.
MEP Wieland expressed interest why the Constitutional Court is not in full composition and the consequences of this problem, such as situations in which cases remain unresolved due to the lack of a majority of votes, as well as the type of initiatives that are submitted to the Court.
