Constitution reopening not needed right now, says President
Skopje, 1 February 2022 (MIA) – President Stevo Pendarovski said Tuesday the Constitution should not be opened too frequently but only if there is a real reason for this.
“The issue is sensitive. If you ask me, we don’t need to open the Constitution right now. As for the future, we should do this only through absolute consensus of all political factors in the Parliament,” said President Pendarovski after a session of the Security Council.
On the initiative to cut the number of MP seats from 120 to 90, the President said it is always good to rationalize costs.
“We all know that the state apparatus is quite big and the Parliament is part of this apparatus. I support all initiatives focusing on cutting people’s costs. However, it is always problematic from a political standpoint when opening the Constitution. I believe that we have opened the Constitution too often over the past years. This should not be the case. The Constitution should be opened only when there is a real reason for this,” said Pendarovski.
Regarding the opposition’s demand for early elections, he said the question should not be addressed to the President.
“As a citizen I say that all of us living here deserve one year without elections. We have had some type of elections every year since 2015, including the referendum, which is a type of choice. However, this is an absolutely autonomous right of political parties in the Parliament. There is only one way that leads to early elections, and this is 61 MPs pressing the button and dissolving the Parliament. I will not go into this matter anymore,” concluded Pendarovski.
