Commission proposes declaring whooping cough epidemic in Skopje

Commission proposes declaring whooping cough epidemic in Skopje

Skopje, 7 February 2023 (MIA) - Considering the latest numbers, with 18 confirmed cases of whooping cough (pertussis) and the rising numbers, especially in the City of Skopje with 14 cases, we have decided to propose that an epidemic is declared in Skopje, said Commission for Infectious Diseases chair Aleksandar Petlichkovski on Wednesday.

"This may sound a bit scary, but in reality it will facilitate our work in managing the risk posed by the whooping cough disease. The Public Health Institute is currently drafting the instructions for procedures during an epidemic and key activities should focus on increasing the vaccination scope," said Petlichkovski.

He added that the pertussis vaccination scope is unsatisfactory.

"We have to focus on this and fill in the gaps. We will inform all those who have missed out on the regular vaccination, propose that vaccination points operate in two shifts and on Saturdays," said Petlichkovski.

The Commission char noted they recommend a ban on admission of non-vaccinated children in kindergartens, thus stimulating the interest for pertussis inoculation.

"The focus is on the youngest children, because the disease can be rather severe at their age," underlined Petlichkovski.
