Chief Prosecutor Kocevski holds farewell meeting with Dutch Ambassador Jan Kop

Skopje, 16 July 2024 (MIA) – The staffing shortage, the insufficient working budget of the Prosecutor’s Office and the effects of the latest amendments to the Criminal Code were the topics discussed by Chief Prosecutor Ljupcho Kocevski and Dutch Ambassador Dirk Jan Kop at a meeting Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Kocevski met with the Ambassador to thank him for his cooperation, dedication and contribution he has made to the fulfillment of European standards in the country in several key areas, especially the judiciary.

“It was a pleasure to live in this country during my term, but working here was often frustrating,” stressed the Dutch Ambassador whose term ends in August, pointing to the culture of corruption penetrating all pores of society and creating complete distrust in the institutions of the system.

Jan Kop and Kocevski also exchanged opinions over the plans to reform the Judicial Council and the Council of Public Prosecutors.

“The support that we receive from the Netherlands for the strengthening of transparency and accountability is exceptionally significant, as well as the expert assistance on reforms and strengthening the capacities and efficiency of the Prosecutor’s Office. True friends are not those who flatter you with nice words, but those who want to encourage you to progress through open criticism. This is precisely the type of friend the Prosecutor’s Office and our country has in you,” Kocevski said at the meeting.

Kocevski introduced the Ambassador to the steps and activities aimed at restoring public trust that he has taken since the beginning of his term as Chief Prosecutor, as well as the problems faced by the institution.
