Ohrid, 15 August 2024 (MIA) - The ridge of Galichica mountain has been burning for almost ten days at two sites, near the Municipality of Resen and on the Ohrid side of the mountain in the southwestern part of the country.

Vegetation has been burning and blazes are spreading fast due to wind and extreme heat.

In the evening, the flames are visible from the border with Albania and during the day, smoke obstructs the view of the mountain. 

Waterbombing crafts were deployed to the site in the past few days. Helicopters are flying over Lake Ohrid Thursday morning, but the firefighting operation is hampered due to the mountain’s elevation. 

About dozen firemen and volunteers from the Mountain Rescue Service, the Galichica National Park and the Ohrid Red Cross are at the site round the clock.

Since last night, local people are urged via social media posts to join the other volunteers in the efforts for battling the blaze so as to prevent it from spreading.
