Bytyqi: IMF to continue strong support on country's EU path

Skopje, 25 September 2023 (MIA) - Deputy PM for Economic Affairs Fatmir Bytyqi met Monday in Washington with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Director Paul Hilbers and North Macedonia Mission Head Jacques Miniane, reaffirming that economic stability and growth in the country largely depends on the fiscal policy, whereas effective government spending and clearly set budget priorities can significantly support a balanced and sustainable economic framework.

The Deputy PM and the IMF officials discussed the importance of an operational mechanism for systemic analysis of public expenditures as a tool for continued and structured assessment of public consumption, identifying the sources of inefficiency and evaluating the alignment of public expenditures with the economic priorities and objectives. The full implementation of this mechanism will help the Government make informed decisions on distribution of public resources, ensuring an efficient and effective use of taxpayers' funds, the Government said in a press release.

Hilbers and Miniane highlighted the significance of harmonizing economic policies with the Sustainable Development Goals defined in Agency 2030, whereas Bytyqi noted that the Government is committed to promoting and implementing policies that stimulate transition towards green economy, such as intensifying investments in renewable energy sources and strengthening the resistance of infrastructure to climate change.

IMF will continue to provide strong support to the country on its road to full-fledged EU membership in the field of economic stability, fiscal discipline and structural changes, policies that are fully aligned with those of EU member-states, reads the press release.
