Sofia, 16 December 2024 (MIA) - Bulgaria’s caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev reaffirmed Sofia’s positions on North Macedonia’s accession to the European Union in a phone call Monday with the President of the European Council, António Costa.
According to Bulgarian news agency BTA, Glavchev and Costa spoke ahead of the European Council meeting on December 19, which will be the first one chaired by Costa.
“European results cannot be achieved with non-European behavior,” Glavchev stressed in the call, according to BTA.
The agency reports that Glavchev told Costa Bulgaria supports North Macedonia’s EU accession provided that the agreements under the 2017 Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourliness and Cooperation between the two countries are respected and that “key reforms related to human rights, the rule of law and good neighborly relations” are implemented.
In the call, Glavchev stressed that Bulgarian society is united on the issue and that no Bulgarian prime minister would support a position other than the one officially adopted by Bulgaria’s National Assembly. He underscored that Bulgaria remains committed to the region’s European perspective, noting that differences need to be overcome through constructive dialogue and mutual respect.
