Bulgaria's Iotova: We want guarantees for the rights of Macedonian Bulgarians
Sofia, 12 September 2022 (MIA) - The main aspect of the Bulgarian and European foreign policy is the European Union's enlargement, especially the European perspective of the Republic of North Macedonia and its relations with Bulgaria, Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova stated while attending the Dimitar Panica School of Politics. Iotova said that anyone who wants to be part of the European family has to understand that the bloc is neither a bank nor a donor, but it ensures freedom and protection of human rights, MIA's Sofia correspondent reports. "We want guarantees for the right of Macedonian Bulgarians, for genuine good neighborliness, and respect of history," she said calling the defending of the Bulgarian position on the inclusion on Bulgarians in North Macedonia's Constitution "a success of the Bulgarian foreign policy." This is, Iotova added, an example of how a success could be achieved after a cooperation with all institutions and political parties in Bulgaria. The EU enlargement toward the Western Balkans affects another major issue - Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo, according to her. "This knot could be only untied with clear perspective for these countries and the signal has to be sent by the EU, otherwise they would always remain conflict hotspots," Iotova said noting that a strong leadership of the European politicians is needed. The Bulgarian official also said that foreign policy is closely connected to security policy all the while underlying the issue of EU's migration policy, which lacks adequate solution for almost eight years. Iotova stated that public debate is missing in foreign policy among some of the leading issues in the Bulgarian election campaign, adding that the country has often suffered from foreign decisions and hasn't tried to be fully part of the European and global decision-making process.
