Skopje, 13 November 2025 (MIA) - The implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is expected to begin in Skopje as of mid-2026. Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski says the project will be implemented with necessary adjustments as the route connecting Drachevo and Radishani was not included.
"I held a meeting with EBRD representatives yesterday. The agreements between the City of Skopje, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance will need to be signed to enter the implementation phase. It will not be an overnight process, but de facto we will enter the implementation phase. I believe that somewhere in the second half of next year we would be ready to launch the implementation of the project. The first phase is EUR 44 million, and EUR 22 million are for the second phase. The first phase includes ensuring the route, the stops, as well as 35 buses, so I hope that by the middle of next year we will start implementation. There are serious preparations ahead. The "United Nations" bridge needs to be protected throughout the entire process, which is not part of the EBRD financing, so we have a lot of work to do, but I believe that in the future we will resolve all the challenges that will arise," Gjorgjievski told Kanal 5 TV on Thursday.
The BRT system was a project launched by former Skopje Mayor Petre Shilegov as an attempt to tackle the traffic chaos in the country’s capital. The EBRD issued an official press release in April 2021.
