Skopje, 10 November 2021 (MIA) – The Budapest Institute of Slavonic and Baltic Philology promoted an anthology titled “A macedón nyelvről” (“About the Macedonian Language”) by Blazhe Koneski. The book is a collection of scientific texts written by Koneski, relating to the Macedonian language and its standardization. It also contains the article “A few words on the Macedonian literary language” by Krste Petkov Misirkov, as well as photographs. Zlatko Panzov, Macedonian language lector at the ELTE University in Budapest, made the text selections. Anamarija Cinege-Panzova translated it into Hungarian. The anthology was released in the prestigious journal Opera Slavica Budapestinensia (Linguae slavicae) of the Department of Slavonic Studies at the ELTE University. The Budapest Macedonian Language Lectorate, the Institute of Slavonic and Baltic Philology, and the Association of Hungarians in Macedonia – TELEDOM in Skopje initiated this project, and the edition was funded by the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia. Professor Zvonko Taneski, Macedonian language scholar who works at the Comenius University in Bratislava, promoted the anthology. “At the start of the promotion, Zlatko Panzov spoke about the necessity and the role of such events to increase the visibility of the Macedonian culture in Hungary. The anthology will allow the Hungarian audience to get acquainted with the development and codification of the Macedonian language, as well as representing a foundation to get ELTE students acquainted with the problematic elements related to our language. In times of denying the Macedonian language, such editions are more than necessary to represent our side of the story,” the Macedonian Language Lectorate in Budapest says. Panzov thanked professor István Lukács, head of the Institute of Slavonic and Baltic Philology, for the immense support they showed during the realization of this project, and his huge role in the development of Macedonian language studies in Hungary. “The promoter, Zvonko Taneski, highlighted that this anthology that we can hold and leaf through contains Koneski’s most important texts, as well as Misirkov’s most important text, dedicated to the aforementioned language standardization phenomenon, so Anamarija Cinege-Panzova’s and Zlatko Panzov’s feat to translate them into modern Hungarian is quite impressive. Philologists are quite well familiar with the fact that the standardization of a language signifies defining the orthography and grammatical rules that would be common for every user of the language. The process of standardization depends on the elected language policy, which may be practical and symbolic,” says the press release. The number of students at the Macedonian Language Lectorate in Budapest has been increasing over the past few years, going from 25 to 35 students a semester, so it’s slowly becoming an important Macedonian language learning center in Central Europe. The Macedonian Culture Days festival in Budapest has been running for the third year in a row this year, having been initiated and organized by Zlatko Panzov. dk/ba/
