Ohrid, 30 August 2025 (MIA) — Severe wind and waves disrupted the 38th Ohrid Swimming Marathon midway and officials stopped the race, MIA's Struga correspondent reports.
According to judge Marjan Boshalevski, swimmers were fighting the waves near the Granit Hotel when the marathon was stopped at 2:30 pm.
"The heavy storm and its high waves caused problems for the swimmers," Boshalevski told MIA's correspondent.
He said the swimmers' times had been recorded and the judges would declare the winners after they analyze the data.
Setting off at St. Naum, 16 swimmers, 10 men and six women, entered Lake Ohrid at 10 am to win the race. The fastest swimmers were expected to complete the 25 km swim around 4 pm, arriving at the city harbor.
The swimmers that took part in the marathon are: Elena Lionello, Rosana Gosheva, Alicja Giedryś, Milica Ljubisavljević, Érika Jenssen, Mayte Puca, Aleksandar Ilievski, Leonid Mishevski, Petar Cekov, Igor Pop Trajkov, Aquiles Balaudo, Matias Diaz Hernandez, Federico Tamborrino, Marco Inglima, Matteo Furlan and Portugal’s Hugo Ribeiro.
The Ohrid Swimming Marathon's prize fund is EUR 12,000. The marathon is organized by the Ohrid Waves 2008 Water Sports Club with the backing of the Office of President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, the Ministry of Sport, the Macedonian Swimming Federation and the Municipality of Ohrid. ad/mr
