Angel Dimitrov: Getting harder to brief on activities of joint historical commission
Sofia, 22 October 2021 (MIA) – The co-chair of the Bulgaria-North Macedonia joint commission for historical and educational issues, Angel Dimitrov, commented on Friday the commission’s 15th meeting, which was held online in the past two days. Dimitrov told reporters that it’s getting harder and harder for him to brief them on the activities of the joint commission, MIA reports from Sofia. “Talks within the joint historical commission were going well until yesterday afternoon, but something changed at the last minute,” Dimitrov said. According to him, his colleagues from North Macedonia were opposing the idea of shared history. For example, he added, they refused joint observation of historical figures, pointing out the upcoming anniversaries in 2022 of the Miladinov brothers and Goce Delchev. Dimitrov noted that historians will have a hard time wrapping up discussions on the 10th and 11th centuries. He also said that “the Macedonian team in the commission is experiencing political pressure,” reiterating that North Macedonia is currently holding local elections.
