Tirana, 24 June 2022 (MIA) – Albanian President Ilir Meta and Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed Friday the decision of the Bulgarian parliament to ‘lift the veto on the Republic of North Macedonia”.
PM Rama says he spoke over the phone with Bulgarian opposition leader Boyko Borissov and thanked him for his role in lifting the veto in parliament.
According to him, GERB and other parties saved the face of Bulgaria and EU while calling on the union to act fast.
“Just got a call from Boyko Borissov. I couldn't thank him enough for his kind thought to call me, but could thank him for his defining role in getting rid of the veto in parliament! Real friend, real leader. His party GERB and others saved the face of Bulgaria and EU! Now EU should act fast!” tweeted Rama.
President Meta also called the veto lifting long-awaited news from Bulgaria.
“Finally, the long-awaited news from friendly Bulgaria, which has always been a firm supporter of our membership process. Voting in the Bulgarian parliament to remove the veto on North Macedonia has opened the path for the start of the accession negotiations of our two countries. The ongoing European Council is next,” Meta wrote in a Facebook post.
