Aggeler: Washington doesn’t give guarantees on EU path since US isn’t an EU member

Skopje, 19 February 2025 (MIA) - Washington doesn’t give guarantees on the path to the European Union, because we are not a member of the EU, the Ambassador of the United States, Angela Aggeler, told journalists Wednesday.

“Washington doesn’t give guarantees on the EU path because we are not members of the European Union. I think that’s a conversation that is happening and has been had with senior officials in the European Union, but I will say that I am delighted that the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet are in Washington. This is an important relationship. I think the fact that he has been there several times since taking his position as Prime Minister, and many of the other ministers, this just speaks to the closeness of this relationship and the many ways that we, as the United States and North Macedonia, bilaterally can cooperate, so I look forward to that being strengthened,” Aggeler said in answer to a journalist's question at a handover event for a Mobile Operation Vehicle for Emergencies (MOVE) to the Red Cross of the Republic of North Macedonia.

Asked about US President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze USAID funding, the Ambassador said she doesn’t yet know how it will impact the future of US development assistance in the country.

“This is a process that is still underway, and frankly I don’t know what the future of our development assistance will look like, it’s under review and I think it’s an important review. But, as I have said publicly and privately, to the Government and our partners, we are here. The United States is not leaving, we are engaged, we are doing fantastic partnership events such as this, and so, we will look at that, examine it and when we have solid answers, we’ll be happy to share them with you,” the Ambassador said.
