Aggeler: It’s critically important for dialogue between Skopje and Sofia to be calmed

Skopje, 23 January 2023 (MIA) – US Ambassador to North Macedonia Angela Aggeler said Monday it’s critically important for conversations between North Macedonia and Bulgaria to be calmed and leaders on both sides of the border to be able to discuss calmly and rationally. She pointed out that she doesn’t believe the escalation in the dialogue should stop or even delay the country’s move forward towards the European Union.

“The people of this country are able to see every day those conflicts and the escalation in some of the dialogue that we see between those in Sofia and those here. I believe it’s critically important for those conversations to be calmed, leaders on both sides of the border to be able to discuss calmly and rationally what the way forward is on some of these problems that we have seen between different individuals and different communities. That’s critically important. But should it stop or even delay the move forward on the question of moving towards the European Union? I don’t believe it should,” the US Ambassador said in an interview with Telma TV.

She applauded Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani for going to Sofia and having the conversation with the Foreign Ministry there and other leaders about how to support minority communities in North Macedonia and how the two countries can move forward in resolving any points of pressure between both governments, so that people of this country can move forward with their European aspiration.
