Admiral Munsch: North Macedonia proves to be a strong and capable ally, a contributor not just a receiver

Skopje, 28 March 2025 (MIA) - Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, Admiral Stuart Munsch, delivered a speech at the ceremony at Ilinden barracks in Skopje on Friday, marking the 5th anniversary of North Macedonia's NATO membership.

“North Macedonia has repeatedly proven to be a strong and capable ally, a contributor not just a receiver,” Admiral Munsch said, adding that for decades our troops have participated in NATO operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina…

He said that the Krivolak training area has become one of Europe’s first military training grounds. Admiral Munsch said NATO knows it can rely on a capable North Macedonia, and North Macedonia knows it can rely on a capable NATO.

Admiral Munsch began his speech with a one-minute silence for the victims of the tragedy in Kochani, expressing condolences and support.

He reminded that North Macedonia started its path toward NATO membership 30 years ago, demonstrating commitment and dedication to reforms, overcoming obstacles, and moving toward transformation.

In March 2020, your ambition, he noted, became a reality. Today, as he mentioned, we are not just celebrating an anniversary but also what can be achieved through the shared values, capabilities, responsibility, and commitment of all NATO members.

“This region and our world will continue to face complex challenges caused by rising tensions and the influence of those who seek to undermine our values and way of life. Together, the 32 nations in NATO will remain united in the face of these challenges because we know that protecting peace is vital. Peace is the best way to ensure long-lasting, sustainable peace and stability. Peace is the foundation for progress and prosperity for all,” he said.

The ceremony was addressed by the Chief of the Army General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, Defence Minister Vlado Misajlovski, and was attended by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi, representatives from the military-diplomatic corps in the country, and other guests.
