2021 Census: Over 95% of resident population is literate
Skopje, 1 June 2022 (MIA) – Over 95 percent of the resident population in North Macedonia aged over 15 are literate, while a total of 18,897 (1.2%) are illiterate.
A majority of the literate population are women as well as more than two thirds of those who are illiterate, shows the third set of 2021 Census data, released Wednesday by the State Statistical Office.
Of the resident population over 15, a total of 1,461,295 people are literate, including 721,734 men and 739,561 women.
Of the 18,897 who are illiterate, 5,517 are men and 13,380 women.
There is no data for 45,174 people out of the total resident population over 15 (1,525,366).
According to educational stages, 23,192 people (1.5%) are registered as having no education; 62.129 people (4.1%) haven’t completed primary education; 423,456 (27.8%) have only primary education; 672,375 (44.1%) have completed secondary education, and 263,349 (17.3%) have graduated from university.
Also, a total of 29,654 people (1.9%) have obtained a master’s degree, while 6,037 (0.4%) are PhDs. Educational stages are unknown for 45,174 people (3.0%).
Of the total resident population aged over 5 that are included in the process of formal education, 186,570 (10.7%) attend elementary schools; 80,378 (4.6%) go to high school, whereas 93,804 (5.4%) are studying at university or to obtain a master’s degree or doctorate.
