‘Logical’ to back US resolution on Ukraine in the absence of a joint EU position, says PM

Skopje, 27 February 2025 (MIA) - Quizzed about the country’s vote on the resolutions on Ukraine in the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Thursday the member states of the European Union lacked a joint position, as such it was “logical” to support the resolution of the United States.
In response to the question posed by SDSM MP Slavjanka Petrovska at a Q&A session of Parliament, Mickoski noted that the EU member states did not veto the resolution or vote against it at the UN Security Council.
“The decision was made because we had a choice between being at the front with our strategic partner, the US, or supporting a joint position by the European Union. When we saw the European Union lacked a joint position on the resolution, then it was logical to back the resolution put forward by the US,” the Prime Minister said.
According to Mickoski, the leaders of the same European countries who “did not block the adoption of the resolution” will visit Washington in the coming period in order to achieve sustainable peace.
“At the end of that process, there will be a resolution that will be akin to the one put forward by the United States, which we, as a country, co-sponsored, and everyone will support that resolution,” PM Mickoski said.
The Prime Minister said the country abstained in the vote on the amended US resolution, which was adopted at the General Assembly, “in full coordination” with the United States.
“I see everyone in the world talking about peace in Ukraine. If we are talking about peace in Ukraine, and we don’t have double standards, then let’s work towards peace. How do we work towards peace? By sitting down, talking and negotiating. By declaring a ceasefire on both sides and sitting down for talks. This is how you achieve peace, and you keep talking until you achieve peace. There can be no peace with military activities on the ground, with victims, with displaced people. That is precisely the resolution of the United States,” Mickoski stressed.
