Teheran/Washington, 15 July 2026 (dpa/MIA) - The United States launched a new wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday, targeting military capabilities that Washington says Tehran has used to attack vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the daytime operation began at around 1000 GMT and was "designed to further degrade military capabilities Iranian forces have used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz."

It did not immediately provide details on the targets or locations struck.

The latest attacks came after overnight strikes and a warning from US President Donald Trump that he would expand the military campaign to target Iran's civilian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, unless Tehran returned to negotiations.

Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday night, Trump said US forces would strike Iran "very hard" over the coming nights and warned the attacks would continue until he decided "it's enough."

"Next week it gets really bad for them because next week comes the power plants," he said. "Next week comes the bridges. We're going to knock out all their power plants. We're going to knock out all their bridges unless they get to the table and negotiate."

Iran reports military and civilian casualties

Earlier on Wednesday, before the US announced its latest daytime operations, Iranian authorities said seven soldiers had been killed in a US strike on a military barracks close to the city of Iranshahr, in the far south-east of Iran. The Mehr news agency, citing the military, said the base was hit by 13 missiles and several other soldiers were wounded.

Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani meanwhile said at least 30 civilians had been killed in US attacks on southern Iran over the past several days, while the Health Ministry said more than 260 people had been injured since hostilities began escalating about a week ago.

Iranian state media also reported that overnight US strikes hit a wheat silo in the south-western province of Khuzestan near the Iraqi border, causing no fatalities.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Washington was striking civilian infrastructure.

The IRGC said the Trump administration was bombing facilities like the wheat storage site "out of weakness and cruelty." It also alleged that a mineral water production facility in the western province of Ilam had come under attack.

Iranian attacks target Jordan, Gulf states

Meanwhile, Jordan said its air defences shot down three missiles that entered its airspace from Iran overnight. There were no casualties or damage, the military said.

The IRGC claimed responsibility for an attack on the Al Azraq air base in eastern Jordan, saying it had targeted hangars used by US fighter jets. Iran's regular armed forces also said they launched drones at targets in Jordan.

Elsewhere in the Gulf, Kuwait said its air defences intercepted hostile aerial targets overnight after detecting drone attacks from Iran, while Bahrain activated air raid sirens and urged residents to seek shelter. 

Both countries host US military bases and have come under repeated Iranian attacks in recent days.
