Zagreb, 15 September 2026 (Hina/MIA) — Croatia's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister David Vlajčić has signed agreements with three elementary schools to implement the "My School without Food Waste" project, which will introduce measures to reduce food waste in school kitchens and educate pupils, teachers and school staff.

The agreements were signed with Tituš Brezovački Elementary School in Zagreb, Vladimir Nazor Elementary in Daruvar and Rikard Katalinić Jeretov Elementary in Opatija. The project will start in October, with pupils receiving an educational picture book on preventing food waste.

Vlajčić said Croatia discards 482,000 tons of food a year, or 125 kilograms per capita, with 54% generated by the business sector and 46% by households. He said €3.2 million had so far been invested in the food donation system, resulting in nine food banks in nine counties.

Amendments to the Agriculture Act are also planned to further regulate food-waste prevention and surplus-food donations, with an additional €400,000 to be invested in food-bank infrastructure in counties without such a system.
