Zelensky receives IAEA mission headed for Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant
Kiev, 30 August 2022 (dpa/MIA) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has received a mission of experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Kiev, he said, according to Ukrainian public television.
He called the arrival of the IAEA mission in Ukraine one of the most important security issues for Ukraine and the world today.
Zelensky called for the demilitarization of the Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, saying a zone should be created around the plant.
He also called for the transfer of the nuclear power plant back to Ukrainian state control as the only way to rule out all nuclear risks.
Led by IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, 14 experts plan to travel across the front line to the nuclear power plant and check on its condition.
Russia and Ukraine have traded accusations of shelling near the plant, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with six reactors.
