Zelensky calls on international community for stronger response to “Russian nuclear terror”
Kyiv, 7 August 2022 (MIA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted on Sunday that the “Russian nuclear terror” calls for a stronger response from the international community, after the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest.
In a phone call with European Council President Charles Michel, Zelensky has called for new sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry, and shared the information on Twitter.
Ukraine’s state nuclear power company said earlier that a worker at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been wounded when Russian forces shelled the plant on Saturday.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi on Saturday expressed deep concern over the shelling of Zaporizhzhia, warning of the danger of a possible nuclear disaster, which could threaten the environment and public health in Ukraine and beyond.
Kyiv and Moscow on Saturday accused each other of “nuclear terrorism”. The Ukrainian nuclear authority Enerhoatom blamed Russia for the damage, while the Russian Defense Ministry blamed Ukrainian forces for shelling the plant.
