Zelensky calls for more weapons ahead of Ramstein meeting

Kiev, 8 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) – Ahead of the high-level meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group at the US air base in Ramstein in Germany, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently called on the country's allies for significantly more arms deliveries.

He said in a video message released in Kiev on Monday evening that sufficient deliveries for the front line, equipment for the brigades and long-range weapons would be necessary in the coming months to stop Russia and force it towards peace.

"We will try to convince our partners at the upcoming 'Ramstein' meeting of the urgent need for significant reinforcement of our capabilities and positions right now, during these autumn months," Zelensky said of the meeting set for Saturday.

"We invite our partners to define how they envision the end of this war, Ukraine's place in the global security architecture, and the joint steps that can steer this war toward a conclusion," said Zelensky.

For the first time, the leaders of the countries supporting Ukraine plan to meet in Ramstein, including US President Joe Biden, who is visiting Germany at the end of this week.

In the past, the US air base in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was primarily the meeting place for the countries’ defence ministers.

Zelensky said the gathering should also focus on investments in Ukrainian weapons production, primarily the production of drones and electronic warfare systems. Zelensky has repeatedly stated his desire to make Ukraine one of the world's largest weapons producers.

Zelensky also announced that he would present his "victory plan" at the meeting to those countries that can strengthen Ukraine and bring peace closer.

So far, the plan, which Zelensky has repeatedly promoted for months, is not publicly known, but it is clear that the country expects, among other things, permission to use long-range weapons deep inside Russian territory and an invitation to NATO membership from the West.

According to Zelensky, a team from the Ukrainian leadership is in the US to discuss the military and military-political details of the "victory plan" in Washington.

Zelensky himself discussed his plan during a visit to the US in September with Biden.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion for more than two and a half years with Western assistance.
