Xavi signs as coach in Barca return and tells fans 'we need you'
Barcelona, 8 November 2021 (dpa/MIA) - Barcelona icon Xavi Hernandez was on Monday presented as the ailing club's new coach, signing a contract until 2024 in the Nou Camp stadium filled with thousands of fans. Xavi and club president Joan Laporta put pen to paper in the presence of Xavi's wife and other familiy members. Laporta said that "this day will shape the history of the club. Welcome home, Xavi and family." Xavi told the fans "we need you" as he starts a daunting task at the club where he won 25 trophies, including three Champions Leagues, as a player. "We are in a difficult situation as a club economically and also in football terms. We have to think just Barca," he said. "We are the best club in the world and we will be very demanding in our work in order to achieve success." Barca languish in midfield in LaLiga, wasting a 3-0 lead in their last game on Saturday at Celta Vigo which Xavi attended. They have debts of more than 1 billion euros (1.17 million dollars) which limits their transfer activities and forced them to let superstar Lionel Messi and others go. The 2010 World Cup winner and two-time European champion Xavi left Barca in 2015 to end his playing career and then coach Qatar club Al Sadd - who let him go last week after Barca activated a release clause to make him successor of Ronald Koeman. His first game in charge is a derby with crosstown rivals Espanyol after the international break on November 20.
