Woman blows herself up in attempted cashpoint robbery in Greece

Athens, 3 May 2025 (dpa/MIA) – A woman blew herself up with a bomb she was apparently intending to use to blow up a cashpoint in Thessaloniki, police in the Greek port city reported on Saturday.

The 38-year-old was taken to hospital but died of her injuries by the time she was admitted, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.

It said that police had immediately ruled out a terrorist motive, as the woman was known to them in connection with previous robberies and had served time in prison.

Police said they suspected that the bomb went off in her hands before she could position it at the cashpoint. Images from monitoring cameras supported this theory, they said.

Local residents reported a huge blast that felt like an earthquake.
