White House restricts journalist access to press area

Washington, 1 November 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A new White House regulation issued on Friday restricts journalists' access to part of its press area, including the office of spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, requiring reporters to schedule appointments for visits.

Previously, accredited journalists could move freely in the press section. The White House said the measures are necessary because the area is also used for National Security Council communications and may contain confidential documents.

The White House Correspondents' Association, which represents journalists covering the White House, criticized the changes, saying they hinder reporters from questioning officials and reduce transparency.

The move comes amid a tense relationship between the White House and the media in US President Donald Trump's second term. Leavitt has repeatedly accused the press of bias and unfair reporting on the president.

Trump suggested weeks ago that media representatives could be relocated from the White House to a nearby government building. Most recently, the Pentagon also tightened access rules for journalists.
