Paris, 8 October 2024 (dpa/MIA) - France's left-wing bloc has failed in its attempt to bring down the country's new centre-right government after a vote of no confidence in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Michel Barnier failed to achieve a majority in the French National Assembly on Tuesday.

Only 197 of the 577 deputies withdrew their confidence from the government of the former EU commissioner in the lower house of the French parliament.

Leftists, communists, greens and socialists are displeased with the political direction of the new government, and in their motion of no confidence, they claimed its composition is tantamount to a denial of the election results.

In the parliamentary election at the beginning of July, the left bloc came out as the largest force but lacked about 100 seats for an absolute majority.

They insisted on forming the government but did not propose a coalition with other parties or achieve toleration by other forces in the National Assembly. In fact, the other political groups threatened to topple a left-wing government.

The Barnier government also lacks a majority but is currently tolerated de facto by Marine Le Pen's right-wing nationalists.
