VMRO-DPMNE MPs to take part in parliamentary debate on constitutional amendments

Skopje, 21 July 2023(MIA) – VMRO-DPMNE MPs will take part in the session of the Constitutional Committee to debate draft constitutional amendments, which was scheduled by Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi for July 25 at 10 am.

“The MPs will take part in the debate, where they will clearly say the arguments against the constitutional amendments and it will soon become clear that the government does not have the majority needed to pass such changes,” VMRO-DPMNE told MIA on Friday.

VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski said several days ago that they will decide at a coordination meeting with our parliamentary group how we will act in the Committee and in Parliament. He said Thursday that after the publishing and forwarding of the draft constitutional amendments to Parliament, the country’s position is dramatically worsening because, he said, it will have an impact in the future as well. “Now,” stressed Mickoski, “the only consensus that can be reached with the Prime Minister is over a date for elections.”

The Government forwarded Tuesday the draft-constitutional amendments to the Parliament.

Changes to the Constitution involve including parts of nations in the Preamble and Articles 49 and 78 of the Constitution, in listing the parts of nations in the country. As regards to the wording: "The citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia, the Macedonian people, as well as citizens living within its borders who are part of the Albanian people, the Turkish people, the Vlach people, the Serbian people, the Romany people, the Bosniak people and others", a comma is placed after "the Bosniak people" and the following is added: the Bulgarian people, the Croatian people, the Montenegrin people, the Slovenian people, the Jewish people and the Balkan Egyptian people". Consequently, a change is also made in the Committee on Community Relations regarding the parity of Parliament representatives from all communities listed in the Constitution Preamble.
