Violent storms cause significant damage in the Czech Republic
Bratislava, 21 May 2022 (dpa/MIA) - The Czech Republic was battered by violent storms on Friday night, including hail in some parts of the country, causing significant damage and traffic obstructions. No casualties were initially reported. The wind reached peak speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. Local fire brigades reported more than 1,000 call-outs. Fallen trees caused damage to cars and blocked road and railway links. The clean-up work is expected to last throughout Saturday, a fire brigade spokesperson said. In the Prague district of Troja, the storm damaged a tent camp set up for refugees from Ukraine. Some of the people accommodated there had to be brought to safety by bus.
