Vevchani Carnival organizers expect large crowds on Jan. 13-14

Vevchani Carnival organizers expect large crowds on Jan. 13-14

Skopje, 3 January 2025 (MIA) — Vevchani is all set for its traditional masked carnival taking place on its streets Jan. 13-14, Vevchani Mayor Spase Kochovski told a press conference Friday.

As is tradition, many carnival masks would be inspired by recent political events, Kochovski said. He added that organizers were expecting the carnival to draw large crowds this year.

According to Minister of Culture and Tourism Zoran Ljutkov, the carnival is an important part of local cultural heritage.

"The Vevchani Carnival, in its thousand years of existence, has remained more than a tradition. It is one of the most authentic symbols of our cultural heritage, which, despite the challenges and lack of continuous support in recent years, has persisted," Minister Ljutkov said.

He said the carnival demonstrated the dedication and love of the people of Vevchani for their heritage. They, he added, kept the spirit of the carnival alive through their perseverance and passion.

Ljutkov also said carnival goers' creative masks mirrored the times, conveying messages, telling stories and connecting the past with the present "in a unique way."

This is why, he said, the central government was working with local authorities and business partners on promoting the carnival internationally.

"Our goal is to promote the Vevchani Carnival as a national brand that offers a unique experience, attracting many with its combination of culture and tourism," the culture and tourism minister said.

According to organizers, this year's music acts include Pajak, Area and Zabranjeno pušenje, who will perform on Jan. 12.

Ljubojna, Naum Petreski, Vevchani Bagpipe and Drums Orchestra, Pero Beli and Koki Bioritam will take the stage on Jan. 13.

The carnival ends with its traditional burning of the masks on Jan. 14. mr/
