Vevchani carnival begins

Vevchani, 12 January 2024 (MIA) — Vevchani is all set for its traditional masked carnival taking place on its streets Jan. 12-14, Vevchani Mayor Spase Kochovski told MIA's Struga correspondent.

 

He said this year's music acts include DJ Ampov, Young Dadi, Igor Dzhambazov and Guru Hare band, and Nokaut, who will perform on Friday.

 

Akustik Band live, Naum Petreski, Vevchani Bagpipe and Drums Orchestra, Pero Beli and Koki Bioritam will take the stage on Saturday.

 

The carnival ends with its traditional burning of the masks on Sunday.

 

Organizers expect many international visitors, diplomats and foreign media, Kochovski said.

 

Many masks are inspired by current political events.

 

The Vevchani Carnival is considered intangible cultural heritage of North Macedonia and the Ministry of Culture has supported it this year with Mden 1.8 million (EUR 30,000). ssh/mr
