Rome, 5 March 2025 (dpa/MIA) - After experiencing repeated bouts of respiratory insufficiency in recent days, Pope Francis spent the night without further complications, the Vatican said on Wednesday.
"Pope Francis rested well overnight and woke up slightly after 8 am this morning," the brief statement said.
On Tuesday evening, the Vatican reported that Francis' condition was stable after episodes of respiratory failure the previous day. He was alert and fever-free, it added.
Furthermore, it said he would be required to sleep overnight with a "non-invasive mechanical ventilation" treatment during which a mask is placed over his nose and mouth.
The Vatican did not provide further information on the 88-year-old's health or any details about the treatment on Wednesday morning.
The head of the Catholic Church has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for almost three weeks.
According to the doctors, he is suffering from severe double pneumonia. Since his admission on Feb. 14, he has suffered several complications.
The doctors at the hospital remain guarded about providing a prognosis on the future course of the disease.
