Vassallo: Opposition to take responsibility if it wants to see country continue on EU path
Skopje, 4 October 2022 (MIA) – Julian Vassalo, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation in Skopje, said Tuesday he would not speculate with dates regarding North Macedonia’s EU accession, saying this will depend on the degree of reforms and readiness of capacities while adding that 2030 could be a reality for the country to join the Union, providing there is political will for this.
Vassallo told a briefing on the screening process and alignment of the country’s legislation with the EU Acquis that the opposition would have to take the responsibility at a certain point of time if it wanted to see the country continue on its path.
He added that the constitutional change is a sovereign decision of the country, noting that North Macedonia has undertaken the obligation to incorporate Bulgarians and other communities in the Constitution.
Vassallo said North Macedonia has a good record regarding the inclusion of other communities, with the legal effect of the constitutional revision to be limited, since “the country is already doing a good job in this field”.
He added that the EU Delegation is in continued communication with the opposition.
