Várhelyi: EU cannot fail Western Balkans, no time to waste
Skopje, 1 September 2021 (MIA) — EU Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said in Bled on Wednesday the European Union did not have any more time to spend waiting around and disappointing the Western Balkans. “We have no time to waste: we need to take decisions to move forward,” he said.
“Enlargement is a process,” the EU Enlargement Commissioner said at the Future of Europe panel at the 16th Bled Strategic Forum. He added it was more of an administrative process than a political one.
“We need to talk about political, economic, social and security integration. These are the topics for the Western Balkans.
“We have a fresh example: Afghanistan. Afghanistan is far away, but the Western Balkans are here. Our responsibility to the Balkans is greater than to Afghanistan. We cannot afford to fail the Western Balkans," Várhelyi said.
He added that the EU should motivate the countries of the Western Balkans but the countries themselves also need to keep up their own motivation.
“We need to be determined to maintain that motivation and make sure the offer we put on the table is sincere,” Várhelyi said. “That way we can speed things up. Afghanistan has taught us a lesson and we have no more time to waste.” mr/
