US military can house up to 50,000 Afghans in the US
The US armed forces can temporarily house up to 50,000 evacuated Afghans on their bases in the United States, the spokesman of the Department of Defence, John Kirby, said on Friday. Previously, the armed forces had spoken of capacity for more than 20,000 people. The admission of additional Afghans is now possible because the military is opening three more bases to accommodate the evacuees, Kirby said. They are mostly former Afghan employees of the US armed forces and their families. They will initially be housed at military bases while the US authorities undertake the lengthy processing of their visa applications.
