US, EU envoys: No model of agreement with Serbia will be imposed
Pristina, 2 February 2022 (MIA) – Concluding their three-day visit to Kosovo, envoys from the EU and the US said they do not intent to impose some kind of model of agreement for settling the disputes with Serbia.
The United States and the EU are not part of the dialogue and negotiations, but Pristina and Belgrade are expected to implement what had been agreed, US Deputy Assistant Secretary Gabriel Escobar and Miroslav Lajcak, the EU’s special envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina talks, said at a joint news conference in the Kosovo capital, MIA’s Pristina correspondent reported.
Escobar urged the two sides to demonstrate constructiveness and showcase their vision of what the community of municipalities with a majority Serbian population in Kosovo should be like in order to end the stalemate in the negotiations.
The United States, he said, expects the Western Balkans to join the EU and Kosovo is required to implement what it had agreed to in previous agreements and find a model on the establishment of the Community without violating the country’s sovereignty.
Kosovo is an equal side in the dialogue, noted the EU envoy Lajcak, and the country is not required to form “a new Republika Srpska” in its territory.
The US and EU officials arrived in Kosovo on Monday to meet with President Vjosa Osmani, PM Albin Kurti, opposition representatives as well as Kosovo Serb representatives.
As part of latest joint attempt of the United States and the EU to revive the negotiations, Escobar and Lajcak will travel next to Belgrade for a two-day visit.
