"Understory“ solo exhibition by Oliver Musovik opens in Regensburg

Skopje, 30 October 2024 (MIA) - Macedonian artist Oliver Musovik's solo exhibition titled "Understory" will open Wednesday at the “neunkubikmeter” (ninecubicmeters) gallery in Regensburg, Germany. The term "understory" defines the Macedonian "undergrowth" - low growth on the floor of a forest). The exhibition will run through November 25.
Building on his installation "Overgrown" (2023), Musovik uses his photographic art to have a look at the human-nature relationship in urban spaces. Inspired by the artist Gilles Clément, Musovik hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between fixed spaces and uncontrollable nature through his art.
Musovik is spending October in Regensburg as part of an artist residency within the European project CreArt.
Oliver Musovik graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje in 1997, MFA in 2004. He has had 20 solo exhibitions in North Macedonia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Serbia, Australia, Montenegro and Austria. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including “REALIZE! RESIST! REACT! Performance and Politics in the 1990s in the Post-Yugoslav Context”, Ljubljana, 2021; “Solidarity - Now More Than Ever”, Weimar, 2019; “AFTERMATH – Changing Cultural Landscape, Tendencies of engaged post-Yugoslavian contemporary photography”, Ljubljana and touring in 2012-14; “HISTORY, MEMORY, IDENTITY: Contemporary Photography from Eastern Europe”, Modena, 2009; 3rd Bucharest Biennale, 2008; 1st Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, 2007; “In The Gorges of the Balkans”, Kassel, 2003; Manifesta 4, Frankfurt, 2002; 6th Istanbul Biennale in 1999.
He has participated in residency programs including Singapore, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Korea, the United States, France and Switzerland.
A number of public collections like the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje; Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (+MSUM), Ljubljana; National Museum of Montenegro, Cetinje; State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki; Fondazione Fotografia, Modena, hold his artworks.
His works have been published in prestigious art publications.
