UN General Assembly adopts resolutions on Ukraine war overruling US

New York, 24 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Monday - with support of European countries, but not the United States (US) - that identified Moscow as the aggressor in its war against Ukraine and demanded Russian troop withdraw from Ukrainian territory.
At the same time, the General Assembly prevented the adoption of an originally Moscow-friendly draft resolution from the US government, by making significant amendments against the wishes of the US and its president, Donald Trump.
The amendments included references to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, calls for the preservation of Ukraine's territorial integrity and for a lasting and comprehensive peace between Ukraine and Russia in accordance with the UN Charter. The US version of the document had not included those.
Washington abstained from voting on its own resolution, as did China, while Russia voted against it. A total of 93 countries, including Germany and most European countries, voted in favour of the text.
Both resolutions in support of Ukraine had a high number of abstentions, which is being seen as a distancing by many countries from the US-European dispute over the right course on Ukraine.
Although a UN resolution is not binding, it has symbolic value as an indicator of global sentiment.
