New York, 28 January 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The United Nations has received an official letter from the US government withdrawing the country from the Paris climate change agreement.
The letter was received at the United Nations headquarters on Monday, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in New York on Tuesday.
President Donald Trump signed an order to withdraw from the Paris Agreement to limit global warming on the day of his inauguration.
The agreement stipulates a notice period of one year after receipt of a corresponding letter. However, the US may no longer be complying with the agreement from now on.
Trump's decree states that the United States assumes that the withdrawal from the agreement and the associated obligations will take effect immediately after notification to the UN.
Trump had previously withdrawn the US from the agreement during his first term in office. However, the withdrawal only lasted a few months because his successor Joe Biden re-affirmed the treaty.
Last week, the US also notified the UN of its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO). The letter, dated January 22, states that membership will therefore end on January 22, 2026.
