Ukraine says prisoner exchange could take place in 'coming days'

Kiev, 7 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Ukraine on Saturday said it will honour a large-scale exchange of prisoners agreed with Russia and the planned transfer of the remains of around 6,000 dead soldiers.

This could happen "in the coming days," according to the Ukrainian coordination staff in Kiev.

It also rejected Russian claims that the exchange and the transfer of the remains was being delayed.

On the contrary, Russia had set its own date for the handover without agreeing on it with Kiev, the Ukrainian side said.

Russia's chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said earlier that Moscow's representatives were standing at the handover point with refrigerated bodies and that the Ukrainian envoys were missing.

In its statement, the Ukrainian staff accused the Russian side of playing dirty and called for a return to constructive work.

It also said it had handed over its list for the exchange of prisoners to the Russian side, including those under the age of 25, the injured and seriously ill.

According to Russian information, the swap concerns 1,200 prisoners on each side. However, the coordinators in Kiev complained that Moscow had handed over lists that did not tally with the agreement.
