Two suspects arrested in Athens two years after journalist killing

Athens, 29 April 2023 (dpa/MIA) – Two years after a journalist was shot and killed in a street in Athens, two suspected members of a gang thought to be responsible for the murder were arrested in the Greek capital on Friday, according to the authorities.

"We said we would do everything we could to solve the murder," Greek Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos wrote on Facebook when announcing the arrests.

Now the judiciary has the floor, he added.

The minister didn't provide further details on the detainees' identities. According to police sources, the two men are brothers and members of the gang suspected of being responsible for the murder.

It was initially unclear whether they also committed the crime.

In April 2021, two unknown men shot and killed one of Greece's best-known bloggers and police reporters, then 52-year-old Giorgos Karaivaz, in front of his house in the Athens suburb of Alimos.

The two perpetrators had fled the scene on a motorbike and were picked up by accomplices in a car after the crime.

Media and colleagues of the victim assumed that the killers had acted on behalf of criminals whose activities the journalist had investigated.

At the time, the case sparked an international outcry. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the act, saying she hoped the criminals would soon be brought to justice.
