Tokyo, 14 June 2023 (dpa/MIA) - Two people have been killed after a trainee soldier opened fire at a military firing range in Japan on Wednesday.

A third person was seriously injured during the incident at a firing range in Gifu, central Japan, local media reported.

Japanese news agency Kyodo reported the 18-year-old soldier who fired the rifle was arrested at the site for alleged attempted murder, citing police. He had admitted to the shooting, police said.

There was no information about his motive. No civilians were harmed in the incident, Kyodo reported.
